Large manufacturing plants will often employ tool designers in order to help them design and plan the construction of new industrial tools. Tools designers will usually have specialized knowledge of the mechanics and structures of the dies, jigs, fixtures and gauges that are used in the production of industrial tools, as well as a detailed knowledge of shop operations and the properties of the material from which tools are made. Tool designers will usually work from drawings, sketches and planning sheets in order to prepare a working design. Tool designers will often be required to make computations involving stress, deflections, temperature expansions, dimensional tolerances and other engineering data.
