Popcorn is a beloved American tradition, served in movie theatres since 1912. Popcorn is a specially cultivated type of maize which puffs up when it is heated to around 175°C (347°F) in oil or by dry heat. Historians believe that popcorn was first developed thousands of years ago by pre-Columbian Native Americans. Popcorn is often served with butter and salt, although recently a variety of popcorn known as kettle corn has gained in popularity. Kettle corn is seasoned by combining salt and sugar in a large heated vat and tossing the popcorn to coat it with a salty-sugary glaze. Popcorn is popular among both kids and adults, and is often served at parties.
