Polyethylene is a light weight plastic polymer – a material composed of many long molecules that are highly entangled about each other. Polyethylene materials are resistant to chemicals and moisture and used especially in packaging, insulation, surgical implants, prostheses, and tubing. The name polyethylene originates from the ethylene petroleum gas that is used to create the polymer. Because of its versatility and durability, manufacturers make a wide variety of polyethylene products that are a part of our daily lives, from food packaging and storage containers to wire insulation to commonplace household items such as shower curtains, plastic beverage bottles and toys.
