Physical therapists are members of a health team, who work under the direction of a physician, to restore a patient's physical activity following an accident or illness. A physical therapist is trained to help patients overcome disabilities through therapeutic exercise, massage and applications of heat, cold, water, and light. Physical therapists also participate in case conferences and frequently consult with other health care professionals to provide maximum benefit to a patient. Some physical therapists are generalists working with people with a variety of needs. Other physical therapists choose to specialize in an area, such as pediatrics, orthopedics, amputations, arthritis, or paralysis. In addition to seeing patients, some physical therapists teach or work as consultants.
