Visit several different types of nursing and convalescent homes and facilities, such as adult day programs in community centers and hospitals, senior assisted living communities, elderly retirement homes, elderly day care centers, live-in homes and rehab day care centers. Check out the environment carefully and ask yourself if this is somewhere you yourself would like to live or visit. If not, move on. In your tours of various adult and elder care facilities, make a checklist of each facility’s good points and bad points, affordable rates and prices, healthcare insurance and government-assisted coverage, professional background, eligibility, programs available, features, activities, personal and medical care, recreation areas, classes, meals, games, transportation, lifestyle assistance services, therapeutic programs, and atmosphere. Also, take a close look at other senior and adult residents or day patients. Do they appear happy and well care for? Are the staff members genuinely friendly, caring, skilled, professional care givers and nurses? Do they have the necessary expertise and qualifications? Once you answer these questions, you’ll be better able to narrow down your choice for a proper nursing and convalescent home, retirement home, or assisted senior living facility, one your loved one will feel at peace in. Whether your loved one suffers from dementia, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, stroke, or other long term medical illness, be sure to choose a nursing and convalescent facility that will help in assisting the patient through the proper health programs, activities and facilities. Inquire if the center or home is non-profit and handicap accessible, and whether it is part of a local, national or international entity. Nursing and convalescent homes are frequently contacted by the elderly and their caretakers. Many times as a person ages and their medical problems increase, it can become very difficult for an individual or family to care for them, so they may have them move into a nursing or convalescent home. In addition to the elderly, individuals of any age who have suffered from debilitating injuries or serious diseases may also be placed in a nursing or convalescent home.
