Mexican food restaurants offer tacos, fajitas, happy hours, dining, brunch, lunch, dinner, tamales, carry out and take out, catering, family dining, steak, beef, burritos, carnitas, jalapeno, chicken, barbecue, vegetables, rice and salsa services and food. While most restaurants have an acceptable safety record, it is always a good idea to make sure that you are patronizing an establishment that prides itself in high quality food and excellent safety practices. Items such as guacamole and seafood must be especially fresh, so it is important that the management knows how to keep all of their food items at optimal temperatures for the correct length of time. Spices such as cilantro and certain peppers are also known to lose their flavor and freshness quickly and have a short shelf life, as most experienced restaurant mangers know. Most Mexican restaurants display a certificate from the state's health department, but if that license is not visible, you are certainly able to ask for this type of verification. Many restaurant patrons enjoy experimenting with new dishes, so they may have a meal or two when they did not particularly like the way the fajitas were grilled, or the items that were included on the nachos or in the tacos. While an occasional imperfect dining experience or cold tortilla is fully expected, a pattern of poor meals should indicate to you that the restaurant does not have the type of food that appeals to you. Because eating out is so expensive, feel completely free to take your business elsewhere. By knowing what questions to ask, you should be able to find the Mexican food restaurant that is best for your happy hour and brunch experience.

Mexican food can be prepared in mild or spicy versions depending upon the type of chiles used in a particular dish. Mexican food can be found in fast food establishments as well as in Mexican-themed restaurants. Salsa is almost always offered in Mexican restaurants along with a basket of tortilla chips. It is a very healthy condiment to keep on hand, and not just for using on Mexican food. Try salsa on a baked potato or atop a serving of brown rice. Years ago, lard was the standard ingredient used for refrying pinto beans or when cooking Mexican or Spanish rice. Today many Mexican restaurants and fast food companies offer menus with selections that are not cooked in lard, but in healthier soy, canola or nut oils.
