Lobbyists are people who speak to politicians and policy makers on a regular basis and who are paid to advance an agenda with the politicians and policy makers with which they speak. Most lobbyists work for lobbying firms or political action groups but some are independent. Some lobbying firms just advance the agenda of one industry or special interest group, such as a tobacco lobbying firm or a lobbying firm for the oil industry. Other lobbying firms simply advance the agenda of whoever their client at the time is. Some lobbying firms work at the state level while others work at the national level in Washington. In some larger cities there are lobbying firms that work on the local level.
