In the early days of television, there were just four television networks that broadcast programming into American homes. TV signals could only be received in a “line of sight” from the transmitting antenna due to the frequencies allotted to television broadcast. Television simply wasn't available to people who lived in remote areas. The emergence of cable television for consumer use can probably be traced back to a community in Pennsylvania. In 1948, the people living in a remote Pennsylvania valley put antennas on hills and ran cables to their houses. Today, the evolution of this technology now gives viewers all over the country access to a wide variety of television programs and channels.
