Wrought iron gates, grills, and railings are usually done by skilled blacksmiths who have been skilled in how to work with liquid hot iron and steel to make furniture, sculptures, weapons, or even decorative items such as religious crosses. Household items, such as light fixtures and cooking utensils can also be a blacksmith's creation. A blacksmith will need a hammer to do his job correctly, as well as other tools to bend and shape metal. If you're looking for a blacksmith to make custom furniture for your home, see if they have any pictures or samples of work they have done in the past. Some blacksmiths may specialize in sculptures or other decorative art. Sophisticated blacksmith may make a variety of products, including religious decorations to weapons of war. Before visiting a local blacksmith, ask if they only make certain products. If you want a steel gate, a blacksmith who only creates weapons may not be your best choice. Get estimates from different blacksmiths on how much they would charge to create your custom order. Some may also have a long waiting period due to having so many orders put in before you. Ask each blacksmith how long they have been in business and how they were trained to work with iron and steel. Based on the information you receive, you can determine who you would like to hire that will stay in your budget and will be able to create your metal order in a timeframe that works with you as well.

Blacksmiths are people who custom make items out of iron by heating the metal and pounding it into shape. In the developed world most blacksmiths are artisan blacksmiths who primarily make decorative items such as gates, railings, grills, light fixtures and furniture out of wrought iron. Modern blacksmiths also frequently create religious items, cooking utensils, sculptures and weapons. Blacksmiths work by forging, drawing, upsetting, bending, punching and welding iron. Some blacksmiths, called farriers specialize in making horseshoes and other iron products for horses. Some blacksmiths sell their own creations while others sell their creations to retailers who in turn sell them. Blacksmiths heat iron in forges and hit it with hammers on an anvil.
